You are curious to go to the gym and lift some weights & to do some training. But confused about what kind of training is good for you. I hope you have heard the terms Weight & Strength Training but not sure which one is best for you & which one you should follow.

What is Weight Training?

Weight training means training with weights to improve your health & fitness.  When you start a weight training programme you are building your muscles size & strength both at the same time. Weight training can be done by using dumbbells & barbells, machines available in gyms and if you are doing a workout at home and don’t have such equipment’s then you can perform weight training by using your body weight.

You can learn the correct technique & body posture of performing any exercise by your trainer to prevent any injury.

Who should Perform Such Training?

Weight training is for those who want to improve their health, physique, want to lose weight.

According to the American Cancer Society, weight training helps in increasing bone density, improves joint flexibility, helps in building muscles, helps in balancing your body properly, it also makes you confident & happier.

The person performing weight training should know also these Weight Training principles to prevent injuries:

  1. Learn correct technique.
  2. Do warm up.
  3. Use appropriate weight.
  4. Start increasing weight slowly.
  5. Take proper rest between sets.

What is Strength Training?

Strength training is performed to build good strength. The main aim of such kind of training is to get strong here you lift heavy weight at low reps it is one step up from weight training in many ways.

You can learn the correct technique & body posture of performing any exercise by your trainer to prevent any injury.

Who should Perform Strength Training?

Strength training is for those who want to build muscles, improve endurance & physical conditioning.

Such kind of training is also performed by athletes to improve strength, to perform better in their sports (like football, basketball, hockey & much more) with lesser chances of injury.

Some basic principles of such training:

  1. It involve lower reps 1-8 reps maximum.
  2. Heavier weights.
  3. Meaningful amount of sets.
  4. Exercises mainly consist of strength training.

What you should choose Strength Training of Weight Training?

As now I have cleared the difference of both types of Training now it depends on you what your main goal is whether to build muscle size or to boost strength.

If you want to build maximum muscle strength, then you should choose strength training; Decrease the exercise volume, increase the intensity & take more rest between sets.

If you want to be bigger, then do Weight Training: Increase volume of your training, reduce the intensity, & also reduce the rest between the sets.

Bottom Line:

Well, I would always start with weight training as it will help me to know the correct form of performing any exercise to prevent injuries then increasing weights & moving towards strength training.

Both the training programmes have more similarities than differences. Strength is not limited to weight training & also involves many efforts that build muscles & also help in muscle conditioning. Both these programmes require dedication, patience, consistency hard work & proper nutrition to see the results.
